Albino Pug (White)

1669

This is just a quick update, as I’m still busy studying.  (I have a Business Enterprises final tomorrow and Intellectual Property the next day)  Anyway, I was browsing the forums this morning and noticed this picture of Mischa, who is an Albino Pug.  Albinism is a condition where the body has a limited ability to produce skin / hair pigmentation.  I’ve never seen an Albino Pug before.  She sure is cute!

Finals!

1661

It’s been a while since my last post, and that’s primarily due to the fact that I’m in the middle of finals.  There’s time for Pugs, but not time for posting on the internet about pugs.  Anyway, here’s more evidence of bagels being Gadget’s favorite food.  He’s here begging for whatever small morsel of breakfast Tricia will send down his way.

What’s your Pug’s favorite food?

Transporting a Pug via Airplane Flight

Does anyone have any tips for air-transport of a pug?

Laurel just posted to the forums:

I resonantly relocated to the U.K. My Pug, Azreal, in Florida , who is staying with family, has her chip, all her documentation, blood work, bags packed and is ready to come! Now that it’s time I’ve been having some MAJOR problems finding an airline that will fly Pugs in general because of there snout-noses. Through out this whole process I’ve stayed in close contact with her Vet. who is over looking her move and I’m shocked he never mentioned there was a greater health risk with pug then with other dogs. The more research I do I’m coming to see I have to find a way to get her in the cabin of the plane but I can’t find any airlines that will do this (especially considering it’s international).
So far the closest I’ve come is Continental Airlines(were she’ll be in the cargo hold were she isn’t even allowed a blanket). When moving here I knew flying her over was going to be hard but i didn’t know her breed was at a higher health risk on planes and to be honest would never made the move in the first place if I had thought she couldn’t with us. If anyone has any advise I’d really be greatfull!Should I geta Pet travel Agent? Could they find her a more “pet friendly” flight? I’ve never traveled on a plane with her and ANY tips would be so helpful. I don’t want to put her in harms way but England won’t feel like home until she’s here!

Does anyone have any suggestions?  My best guess would be to find the most “pet friendly” international airline and use them.  If they won’t let you put the pug in the cargo hold, then wouldn’t one option be flying from England to the US (pickup the pug), then fly back with pug in the cabin?

I searched for “international dog transport” on Google and some companies came up — maybe one of them is good?

If anyone has any information about this topic, please share!

Gizmo Rules

1559

We recently painted the “extra” room in our house pink, because we’re getting it ready to be a nursery. During the process, Gizmo got ahold of the paint and a brush, and had some fun. He decided to “tag” the wall with an appropriate phrase.

P.S. – We call Gizmo, “Momo” for short (we also use “mo” and Tricia sometimes uses “Gizzy” or “Gizzykins”). For Gadget, we use “Gadg” and “G.” Oh and we totally imagine them as characters. I was thinking about starting a cooking blog (I like to cook) and I can’t help but think of Gadget as a chef, with the white jacket and tall white chef’s hat.

What nicknames do you have for your Pugs?

Gadget’s Favorite Food…

Is this a New Dog Bed?

Here is Gizmo & Gadget sitting in a piece of new furniture my mom bought us. They really like it in there! It is high up, just how they prefer. Somebody needs to tell them that it is not a dog bed though. It’s a bassinet and it is not for them. The bassinet is for their little sister who is coming soon! We are expecting our first child–a baby girl–in about 10 weeks! Tricia is now in her third trimester and everything is progressing well. We are so excited, not only for our daughter, but for the pugs and how they will react to her. We just know they are going to love her just as much as they love us. The coming year will be the cutest one yet on urbanpug since babies + pugs = pure cuteness!!!

Dog Food They Really Like

We’ve had problems with finding food that satisfies two requirements:

  1. Gizmo and Gadget must LIKE the food.
  2. The food must not cause either Gizmo or Gadget any type of gastrointestinal problem. (No vomiting or diarrhea)

For a long time, we fed them Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover’s Soul brand dog food. They liked it as much as any dog likes dry dog food. However, occasionally, Gizmo would vomit — maybe as often as once per week. So, we started trying different foods. Changing foods in itself can cause problems, most notably, diarrhea.  To combat this problem, we would mix something like Science Diet Sensitive Stomach or canned pumpkin into their food.  Ultimately, even if we got them adjusted to the food, by the time this happened, they’d get tired of the food, not eat it, and beg for food (more than usual).

This became an even bigger problem when we started giving them less food,  twice per day (for Gadget to lose weight) because when they don’t like food, they pick at it during the day.  If there’s only a limited amount of food and they know it, they’ll still pick at it, but they also get a little bit territorial — well, Gizmo gets territorial and doesn’t let Gadget eat his share.  Because of this, the ideal situation is one where we can put food down twice per day and have them gobble it up right away.

Here’s our solution.  We’re now giving them limited portions of canned food only, twice per day.  Also, we rotate which canned food we give them.  We’re using Innova EVO and Wellness brand canned food.  Both of them come in several flavors with similar ingredients.  Wellness comes in flavors like Chicken+Sweet Potato, Lamb + Sweet Potato, and Whitefish + Sweet Potato.  Innova has no grain options, duck, venison, etc.  My point is that both come in several flavors and that they’re similar enough so as to not cause digestion problems.  The rotation of flavors keeps them interested in the food — they never get “bored of eating the same thing over and over.”  They both gobble up their food right away because they like it!

The cans say to give a certain amount of food per dog weight, but we’re giving less than that, for several reasons.  First, they aren’t very active.  Their day consists of following us from room to room, barking a bit, and one approximately 20 minute walk.  Oh, plus some sleeping, snuggling, and begging for whatever bits of our food they can get.   Second, we’re trying to get Gadget’s weight down.  Having a few less calories than necessary is good when we want him to lose weight.

Gadget’s weight is down, though I’m not sure how much.  He’s looking slimmer, and he doesn’t get as hot as he used to.  Because of this, he is now sleeping in bed all night, as opposed to his previous “hop out of bed and go sleep on the tile floor in the bathroom to cool off.”  He still doesn’t jump up on the bed by himself (he can do it, he just doesnt) — though I think this is more because he’s scared to jump than because he thinks he can’t do it.

What do you do for feeding?

Gadget Loves String Cheese

For some reason, Gadget just goes completely bonkers for string cheese. I captured a little bit of his behavior in this video.

Topsy Turvy

Gizmo and Gadget snuggle together all the time. In this picture, they are snuggling, but Gizmo is upside down while Gadget is lying on his belly. Gizmo was practically begging me to take this picture! He likes being upside down a lot. Sometimes, when he positions himself like this he looks like a Boston Terrier because his ears appear as if they are pointed. He’s a total goof ball and Gadget just sits there calmly as always:)

Gizmo vs. Troll Doll

Gizmo doesn’t know what the Troll Doll is, he just knows that little things like it aren’t supposed to be standing on top of the picture frame.

Urban Pug TV

I have a friend who works at Google, and he got me interested in the YouTube developer API, which lets programmers query YouTube for videos.  So… I made Urban Pug TV.

You can now get all the YouTube Pug Videos right here!  It’s still “beta” (which means that I don’t know what I’m doing and it might break) but it does work to let you see some cute / funny videos!

Anyway, test it out and tell me what you think (and tell other people, too!)

It’s at http://www.urbanpug.com/tv

YouTube Halloween Pug Videos

As promised, here are the videos!

Note, I actually have one more video, but it’s too big to upload to YouTube!  I’ll have to figure out how to make it smaller to get it uploaded…

Pug-O-Ween 2007 (Pug Halloween Party)

1252

Today was the second annual Pug-O-Ween Party hosted by the New Orleans Pug Meetup Group. We had a GREAT turnout, with LOTS of pugs coming in costume! There was a really wide variety of costumes — space pugs, rabbits, spider-pugs, devil-pugs, vam-pugs… I can’t begin to list all the costumes. So, take a look at the pictures, and I’m putting the vids I took on YouTube — I’ll post links to them when they’re up!

I’ve posted all the pictures here: Link To Album

how to integrate a new puppy into your family?

Perkins10 writes in the Forums:

“My husband and I will be adding another pug to our family in about 2-weeks. We have a 4yr old female named Yoshi. We are going to be adding a male. We would appreciate any advice that people have on integrating the new puppy. Our Yoshi is the love of our lives and we have spoiled her. We are excited about the puppy, but worried about her adjustment.”

If you have any advice, please go over to the forums and help out!
