This weekend, I made a practice batch of sugar cookies. I’m particularly concerned w/ the icing, so I tried a couple variations. (Still working on it) Anyway, I gave Gadget a taste, and this is his “I’m so happy” face, sitting there with icing still on his face.

This post is to inform you that due to a 3-1 vote, Gizmo is no longer “An Annoying Bee” and Gadget is not a “Cowardly Lion”

Gadget is now “Gadget the Lion Hearted”
Gizmo is now “A Bee in your Bonnet”

That is all.

Quick update: The harnesses are good. They are made of a very soft material (we even got leashes made out of the same material / colors, for those of you who want to match) — They’re washable, and they’re made of very strong velcro. I suggest getting a “small” for your pug. Gadget’s on the very big end for pugs, and he “just barely” fits into the harness.

The harnesses are from FunnyFur.com

Oh, update: I’ve got another website, Resizr, which resizes images, then lets you do things with the images, like post them to myspace, email them, or send them to your cellphone. I just enabled “send to cell” functionality with UrbanPug. Now, you can email or send to cell pictures on the site, just click the little button below the image, and it will take you to resizr to send the picture.

So, FunnyFur.com is an Urban Pug sponsor, and we just got some goodies in from them. First off, we got these velcro harnesses that are really cute. We got the “bee” and the “lion” since we think that those fit G&G’s personalities perfectly.

They seem to like wearing the harnesses — they usually try to take clothes off. We also got some special shampoo and dog-clothes cleaner which I’ll be talking about when I get to using them.

Right now, Gizmo and Gadget are really liking their new harnesses.

This picture is of Gizmo, but you can see Gadget here or here.

Also, right now, FunnyFur is having a really big spring sale and is offering free shipping on orders through March 31! Follow the link above or enter “ff0307ship” as the offer code.

They also sent us some plush toys. I don’t have pictures of those yet, but you can see the same ones at Adore Le Pug

Pug in a mixing bowl!

Originally uploaded by jmatthew3.

Today I decided to make sugar cookies. When I was done with the mixing bowl, i decided to let the pugs lick the bowl. I put it on the floor, and expected gadget to go crazy.

Well, he just looked at it.

Then, I gave him a taste of what was inside, and he knew it was something he wanted.

So, he started trying to figure out how to get at what was in there. Apparently, just sticking your head down in there wasn’t something he wanted to do just yet, so he just started growling at the bowl, not sure what to do.

So then, I tilted the bowl onto its side, and the picture shows you what happened for the next 10 minutes.

Gizmo is standing next to him, thinking “hey, this is just ridiculous”

Pet Food Recall

Certain types of dog AND cat food have been linked to kidney failure and deaths of pets.

The brands affected are Iams, Eukanuba, and certain store brands.  A full list of the exact brands will be provided online, here today.

I saw this on the MSNBC website, here.

Small red bumps after playing with dog?

Kimmie7’s having a problem.  When she plays with her dog, she gets red bumps on her forearm.  Does anyone know what the problem might be?

Help her out in the forums.

I think it might be allergies.

This weekend, I gave the boys a bath, and Gadget didn’t want to get wet, so we put a shower cap on him.

He kinda looks like a chef here. I like to pretend he’s got an Italian accent, and he’s telling me how he’s going to cook meatballs.

Click on the picture for a few more shots of him.

Pug Squinting Eye Problem

Tricia noticed this morning that gadget was keeping one of his eyes mostly shut, so she’s taking him to the vet.  It’s probably just a tiny something in his eye, or at worst a minor scratch.  However, it’s really important to take care of pug eye problems really quickly, so she’s there with him right now.

See more about eye problems in the forums.

Update: Gadget just has a minor scratch, but we have eye drops for him. Also, he’s lost some weight! I guess the Innova EVO is doing him good.

Now your pug can go to the oscars!

If there were a pug awards ceremony, what would it be called?  What would the awards be for?

Best pug in a supporting role?
Best original snore?
Best male pug in a dramatic bid for food?
Best pug costume design?

Maybe we should have a “Puggies” award ceremony?

Anyway, there is now a limited edition “Red Carpet Collection” by Little Lily, of dog clothes inspired by fashions from the 2007 Academy Awards.  check it out at Funny Fur (click the “what’s new” button up top)

Flea Problems?

Here’s another question that I don’t know the answer to, so I’m referring to the forums:

Recently, David wrote in about problems he’s having with controlling fleas.  He doesn’t want to use really strong chemicals, because it might harm his Pugs.  Do you have any advice for him?

I’m not sure what to say.  Of course, flea collars aren’t good, but there have to be some really good flea products out there that don’t cause health problems AND are long lasting.  My best suggestion is to ask a vet.  They probably know the answer!

Please help David out if you know anything by responding in the forums.

Keep Pug? Or give back to someone who can take care of it?

Here’s a quick post.  Leeann writes in the forums:

“My 18 year old daughter, high school senior brought home a pug! She’s
been wishing and dreaming for years and she finally just did it. All
the mom/daughter stuff aside, is there any way I can let her keep this
delightful puppy even though I work and she goes to school? Are there
others who manage this? I would really appreciate some good direction
here since I feel certain my heart won’t let him go, but I do not wish
to be unkind either.”

What do you think?  Respond in the forums

Mardi Gras Gizmo and Gadget #1

Originally uploaded by jmatthew3.

For those of you not from New Orleans, today is Mardi Gras, also known as Fat Tuesday. It’s the last day before Lent starts, and it’s usually a big party. For more about the holiday, follow the link to the Wikipedia article about it.

Anyway, Gizmo and Gadget got in on the partying, and you can see them here, displaying their collected beads. (Nobody was giving out dog treats!) Lexy is actually right next to them, but we couldn’t get all three pugs in the picture. There is a really good picture of lexy here.

Oh, and I’ll have another post about this soon, but we now have a new sponsor — FunnyFur.com. They’ve got lots of products that work well with pugs, along with a good sizing chart. You can see their ad on the right hand side of the page. They’re very Pug friendly, they even have their own Pug Blog (Adore Le Pug!!!

Missing Dog Found (and returned)

Billy was missing!

Originally uploaded by jmatthew3.

Last night we went to get a quick bite to eat. About 10 minutes after we got back home, Tricia noticed a FOURTH dog in the house. Now, we’ve got a gated yard, so how a dog got into the yard, let alone inside the HOUSE we have no idea.

So, we talked to some neighbors, and nobody knew this dog. We walked around with him, and nobody was outside looking for their dog. The numbers on the tag didn’t work, and the address was very far away from our house. — we were really puzzled at how this dog made it into our house. Eventually, the rabies tag data service called us back and gave us a phone number that *did* work.

Here’s the weird part. In grade school, Tricia lined up alphabetically with her classmates. The owner of the dog was the person whose name was right next to hers. This person has a new last name now, so it wasn’t recognizable, and, well, we didn’t know she lived around the corner anyway, so it wouldn’t have helped. It’s just strange that of all places this missing dog found to be, he made it into our house.

Now, here are some interesting things about how the pugs handled it. Gizmo, the dominant one, didn’t bat an eye. He just sat there and watched Gadget go run and play/fight. Gadget and Billy (the other dog) didn’t really “fight” as much as jockey for position. They both repeatedly tried mounting each other, and they did the thing where they are both on their hind legs, with there front paws up in the air, each one flush against the other one. It’s almost like what you picture when you think of two male rams fighting over territory.

It’s weird to me that it wasn’t GIZMO out there fighting.

Anyway, the whole situation got Gadget so riled up that he kept on begging to go out front, which is where he was interacting with this dog. I’d open the door for him, he’d run out front, look around, then come back in. And this isn’t “normal” gadget, i’m talking about — he was extremely excited / demanding / agitated. Even this morning, when we got up, he was doing the same thing. Eventually this morning he got over it, and realized that this other dog wasn’t around anymore, but it was odd nonetheless.

New (old) furniture refinished

We’re starting to get close to being “fully moved in” to the new place. Pretty much all the stuff has been moved to the new house, and we’ve been in a somewhat extended organization period.

Most recently, we had some furniture refinished. My grandparents purchased some danish modern furniture in the 60’s, and although some of it had gotten pretty banged up, it’s actually pretty nice. So, now that we’ve actually got room for furniture, we decided to get it redone.

We just got the set back, and we’re really happy with the results. Gizmo decided he wanted to be in the picture, too.

Also, Mardi Gras is beginning, and my parents usually stay in a hotel downtown for the holiday. Therefore, Lexy (their pug) is staying with us for a few days. We’ve got THREE pugs in the bed, now!
