Pug Therapy – Pug Poetry Contest, Win the Book!

Pug Therapy, I’d say, goes by the pug motto, Multum in Parvo, which roughly translates to, “A lot in a little.” It’s a fairly small sized book, but inside, it’s packed with lots of really cute pictures to brighten up any Pug lover’s day. It contains lots of pictures of pugs in various places, doing various “pug” things. If you read through it, you’ll see, “Hey! this picture is like my pug!” probably at least once. That’s a good thing. It shows how pugs are universal, and how they can really be lots of fun or get you through some tough times.

I’d say this book would make a great gift to any pug lover, and it’s fairly reasonably priced, only about $10 at amazon (click the image to go there).

Anyway, to promote the Urban Pug Forums, we’re giving away a Gizmo and Gadget autographed copy of the book, along with a P is for Pug T-shirt and a Pug bumper sticker to the winners of a contest. We’ll have first and second prizes. First place gets an autographed copy of Pug Therapy plus a T-Shirt or similarly priced product, and second place gets a bumper sticker of your choice. To win the prizes, you have to go over to the urban pug forums, and post some original “pug related” poetry. It can be simple, as long as it’s creative. We’ll judge based on how closely you reflect the “pug spirit”Entries must be posted in the “Pug Poetry” section of the forum, and they must be posted on or before November 1, 2006.

Good Luck! — Oh, and PLEASE let everyone know about this contest!

The Hunt for Pug October

Ok, the title has nothing to do with the picture, I just thought it was funny.

So. This month is going to be busy. We’ve got the Pug Meetup Halloween party, Gizmo and Gadget’s birthday (they’re three!), and oh yeah, we’re in law school.

Oh, I just got a package in the mail the other day of Pug Therapy, a cute little picture book about pugs!. Random House asked me to review it! Can you believe that? I’ll be working on putting a review up when I can. Also, to let everyone know, they sent me TWO copies, so I can have a contest to give away the second copy!

When I review the book, I’m going to put up the rules for the contest, too. However, I’m pretty sure the contest is going to have something to do with posting in the forums.

More later!

We’re busier than ever, but not too busy for Pugs. Gizmo and Gadget have switched to Science Diet “Sensitive Stomach” formula. I think they like it fairly well, and I think it’s solved Gizmo’s sensitive stomach problem.

Also, we’ve found some good treats. Wal Mart sells chicken jerky for dogs, and the pugs just absolutely love it. Gizmo loves it so much he does his, ‘take the food, run and eat it away from gadget’ thing.

This picture is of gizmo resting on the sofa. He just plops down right on the back like this.

Pug Meetup September 2006

We went to the Pug Meetup this weekend, at Jefferson Feed. There will be a Halloween party next month, which should be fun.

Anyway, I’m just taking a quick break from reading, and I thought I’d post the video I took yesterday.

Oh, also, do you have a specific word that your pugs really respond to? If you say a certain word, do they go crazy? Tell everyone about the word in the forums.

Pug Dog v. Miniature Schnauzer

No time for pictures right now, just giving a quick update.

Today, we went on a walk around the block, and there’s this Miniature Schnauzer that’s always barking at us like crazy from inside a window. Well, we saw him today outside, and he was barking at us so much that he was literally choking himself. It’s sad that he is so not “balanced” (as Cesar Millan would say). The dog is either so afraid or so possessive or so whatever, that he is totally not in control of himself.

Anyway, the dog owner was holding her dog back as we passed, but Gizmo and Gadget were doing their “trot” and just sniffing around, like dogs do. The next thing I knew, this other dog had gotten off of his leash and RAN up to G&G backing at them! Before I knew it, he was right there. I was sure that I was going to have to break up a fight, and I got really protective. I know this dog is crazy, and I was expecting to have to get down on into it and break up a fight.

Now that I’m thinking about it, it’s kinda scary. I dont know how I would have reacted if this dog had actually attacked my dogs. I know this dog is just being a dog and is basically a product of his environment, but in order to protect my dogs, I may have been violent with this other dog. At the very least, he would have gotten a swift, firm kick or two.

After the dog got off his leash, he barked and barked, but when he got up to G&G, he just stood there and sniffed them (although still being aggressive). I’m not sure what to make of it. Maybe he would have attacked if given more time. I did get my foot in between him and Gizmo before anything could happen, and his owner did get him back on his leash, but… what if something else had happened?

Certainly, I think that this dog owner needs to take serious precautions with their dog. This dog, known for being really aggressive and violent towards other dogs needs to have special care taken to keep him on his leash. The dog owner probably should use a harness, rather than just a collar, so as not to choke the dog. I think what happened was that she was trying to hold the dog to keep him from choking himself, but ended up taking him off the leash, and then he squirmed out of her arms.

That’s just not right.

Proof of Gizmo’s Weirdness!

Here’s the deal. Gizmo takes a few kernels of food out of his bowl at a time, puts them on the floor, then eats them. We can’t figure out why, but here’s PROOF that he does it.

Happy Labor Day!

We’re taking it really easy this weekend, especially Gizmo. Here, he’s sitting in the sun on the sofa in his new designer shades.

great dane and black lab control?

Here’s something that’s bothering me.  Yesterday morning, I walked g&g early in the morning and we saw someone walking their dogs.  It was a woman in her 40’s about 5’6″ 130 lbs.  She was walking a large black lab AND a black great dane (only a bit larger than the lab)

both dogs heeled, but the woman still had trouble controlling them.  not that they weren’t doign what was asked, but they were just so big that any movements of theirs were hard for the woman to deal with.

i ask you, is this right?  i think that someone who is “just barely able to control their dogs when they are calm and submissive” should NOT be walking those dogs.

that’s just myopinion.

Gizmo Loves The Chair (and my rant about my poor food service)

Gizmo in the chair

Gizmo absolutely loves going in the chair when we study. Whether it’s next to me or next to tricia, he’s got to be sitting next to us. Gadget’s a licker. That’s exactly what he’s doing in this picture, though you can’t really tell.

The pugs are pretty closely shaven, though you can’t exactly tell. The thing that gives it away is that you can see his “wrinkles” on his body (he and i disagree that they are fat rolls). Pugs can just be wrinkled all over their body, you just never see the other wrinkles because they are covered by hair.

Oh, and I have one complaint for today. I think that food service businesses should pay much closer attention to their customer service and quality of product, especially the smaller ones. I had a wrap today at lunch, and the woman who made it threw everything together and wrapped it up so shoddily that i had to eat it with a fork after it fell apart. Then, at dinner, the sausage w/ my red beans wasn’t hot.

The cafeteria at work had some similar problems. I contend that these problems are enough to cause significant financial harm. For example, I will probably never get a wrap from this place again. Say i’d eat there 2 times a week for the next 3 school years (9 months * 4 weeks * 3 years * 2 times per week) That’s 216 wraps at about 6 bucks each is about 1300 dollars i probably would have spent with them that i won’t. just because i now think that the wraps i get there will be put together poorly. just because that one person gave me bad service.

i dont know, i think part of the problem is that the person who served me has no incentive to do a good job. is she a stakeholder in the company? no. was there even a manager there? i dont think so. there’s literally no accountability for performance or “intangible incentive” to do a good job.

she’s not going to get a bonus if i go back day after day. she’s not going to be penalized if she doesn’t do her job. the only thing that lets her do a good job is internal respect for oneself in doing a good job, which i think is extremely hard to find in that industry. — waiting tables at a fancy restaurant, or even a not so fancy restaurant, you have people who are going to care about what they do. at the wrap place in the food court of a university? maybe not

gadget says he doesnt care if his wrap is made messily, he just wants one.

Sound Asleep Pugs (Pugs at law school?)

It’s my first week of law school, and i’m busy, so I don’t have any pictures, but I do have something funny to report.

I’ve been getting up a bit earlier (a lot earlier) — The alarm goes off at 5:30 on MWF.  Tricia and I drive to school together, I drop her off, I go to school, and I pick her up later.  (This is in exchange for the prized parking pass which lets me park closer to the my law school than anyone else at my school, probably including faculty [except those who teach at both law schools])

yes, there are some who teach at both, and, REALLY oddly enough, tricia (a 3L) is in the same class with the same professor at a different school as me.  We both have the same prof for Criminal Law.

The first year of law school is very structured.  You have to take certain classes.  It’s really odd that an upperclassman would be in Criminal Law, much less a third year.  It’s all because of Tricia’s shift from night to day student status along with Katrina really screwing things up for several semesters.

Anyway, back to pugs.  because weve been getting up so early, and, well, the pugs aren’t adjusted to it yet, they’re complete BRICKS when we wake up. (so am i)  This morning, i picked gizmo up and moved him, and i dont think he woke up at all.

I dont know if this is all that funny.  I’m just tired.  If you want to make me happy, talk about your pug in the forums.  See link below. (No really, i love seeing people post, I love seeing the pictures of your dogs, I love hearing about them.  It makes me happy to take a moment in the middle of the day to go check the forums and see a new post.)

Pug Overheating?

Just a quick update: Pugs can get lethally overheated very easily. To promote some discussion of this, I’ve started a thread on the subject — How Hot Is Too Hot? – Pug Overheating.

Gizmo and Gadget Pug Painting by Vanessa Ezell

Tricia’s friend Courtney gave us this AMAZING painting for a wedding gift, and it just came in. WE ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT. It’s from a photo that i turned into a Pug Wallpaper that Courtney gave to the artist, VaNessa Ezell, who runs the website Pawsed in Paint.

This is totally awesome. Gizmo thinks it’s amazing, and so does Gadget. It’s going up above the sofa as soon as i can get the equipment to hang it.

We’ve been tagged! Pugs Love Broccoli

Here are the rules:

List 5 weird things about yourself or your pets. Tag 5 friends and list them. Then, those people need to write on their blogs about 5 weird things, and state the rules, and tag 5 more people. Don’t forget to let the people you tag know by posting a comment on their blog!

1) Gizmo pees on us when he’s around people he doesne know sometimes. We think it’s because he’s claiming us.
2) Gizmo has to find the highest spot. He climbs onto tables, backs of sofas, onto even low ledges, if that’s the high point he can get to.
3) Gadget rests his chin on everything. If there’s something for him to put his chin on, he will do it.
4) Gizmo takes 1 kernel of food out of his bowl at a time, puts it on the floor, then eats it.
5) Gizmo and Gadget both LOVE broccoli. they go bonkers for it.

I’m tagging:

  1. Shelby
  2. Riley
  3. Oscar
  4. Meimei and Miko
  5. Captain

If you’re not tagged, please share your own pug’s weird behaviors in the urban pug forums.

We met lots of pugs at the meetup, and I posted all the pictures in a flickr photo set.

It’s been a busy week, and things are just going to get busier. I have orientation for law school this week. It’s strange to have planned something for so long and, well, it’s here. I’m starting. It’s still a strange feeling.

Web Based Image Resizing Tool

So, I’ve been working on a tool to resize photos, and it’s about ready for the public to use.  I call it RESIZR.  It makes use of scriptaculous and the GD library to resize images.  It’s meant to be extremely simple.
